The lodge is nestled on a large grasssed area at the edge of the bush on the south side of Nydia Bay and has its own jetty.

It is a great base for boating, walking, fishing, mountain biking and swimming and is well suited to those using the Nydia Track, as well as to large groups. Fishing and swimming is possible close to the lodge. For those with their own boat it is a good base for fishing further afield. A permit to hunt on the public land is available but care must be taken not to trespass on to private land and hunting is not allowed in the area when the lodge is occupied. For those with an historic interest there are remnants of the bygone era of indigenous logging in the bay.

Up to 50 people can be accommodated in 9 separate bunk rooms allowing for smaller groups or individuals. Wheel chair access is available to all service buildings and one accommodation block. The kitchen has cutlery, crockery, cooking utensils, pots, pans and a large gas oven and elements. It is attached to the large hall/dining area and food storage area with fridge and freezer, which make up the main building. A BBQ is also available. Hot showers, flush toilets, electric lighting (by generator to 10pm only).

Bookings are essential, and must be made online for stays between 1 November and 30 April at https://booking.doc.govt.nz/Menu.aspx?sg=NYL or by phoning 03 520 3002 (weekdays between 8am and 4.30pm). A warden is present between 1 November and 30 April.

Fees per person per night: Adults $15 / Youth/child $8 (shared occupancy). Note: A minimum fee of $30.00 per night for up to 2 people applies per night 1 May - 31 October.
